Buses I/O Report
by Douglas Banks

Buses I/O is the second Research I/O report, a method developed by ArtRebels for structuring and presenting in-depth research in ways that are accessible, engaging and — in the end — actionable. We identified concrete issues and potential opportunities within the bus industry and framed high-level questions to start a conversation.

Buses I/O explores new business opportunities for Daimler Trucks Asia based on the three major segments of the global bus market, which are:

Transit Buses
How can DTA take a more holistic and collaborative approach to public transit?

Long-Distance Buses
How can DTA become world-leaders in amazing, sustainable long-distance hospitality?

School Buses
How else could DTA become providers of social mobility by empowering access to education?

The intention of Research I/O is not to present conclusions or answers, but to first make sure that we’re asking the right questions. These questions and others will form the basis of the Explorations we launch for buses, and then, subsequently, any concepts we begin to develop. But before we do that, we want to know what questions DTA is most excited to explore around the (near) future of buses. We’ll send more information on how to share them in the coming weeks.

The Buses I/O presentation is available here.

Talk by Strategy Director at SPACE10
Guillaume Charny-Brunet

Guillaume started his presentation by taking us on a highly insightful and entertaining journey through the history and evolution of innovation by unfolding the rapid transformation of mobility, starting in the era of la belle epoque at the end of the 19th century and moving up until today.

“The further back you can look, the further forward you can see.” – Winston Churchill

By putting the current global transformation into a historical context, we began to better understand that rapid change and transformational innovations are nothing new. In fact, it always has been part of our society and by embracing the challenges we face we have the opportunity to create new things, make better things and, most importantly, make things better. But innovation is no silver bullet. It is a process of survival and finding new ways to create a flourishing business for the years to come.

Innovation is all about adoption and therefore about people. The second half was dedicated to SPACE10’s way of working and setting ideas in motion. Guillaume unfolded a few selected cases such as Spaces on Wheels and the IKEA Place app, and most importantly how he as strategic director engages with IKEA stakeholders and builds the necessary bridges between the lab and the Swedish furniture giant to secure that the identified business opportunities and new ideas get caught and eventually implemented as new business ventures, within or around IKEA.

“Change will be decided top-down, and implemented bottom-up”

As a close-up, Guillaume offered to the whole team to block some of his time in the weeks to come should there be more specific questions about how SPACE10 creates both direct and indirect impact for IKEA.

Hangout with CEO of New Lab
Shaun Stewart

Due to the Corona Virus outbreak and countries shutting down their borders, Shaun joined the Learning Expedition remotely from his apartment in New York City. He started his presentation by unfolding the story of how he became the CEO of New Lab, a platform for scaling frontier technologies after working in several leading tech companies, including Google X and Waymo.

Over the last couple of years, the world has seen record levels of investment, next to unprecedented drops in alignment between innovation and business strategies. Together with the founders David Belt and Scott Cohen, they created a deeply collaborative ecosystem of growing entrepreneurial companies fueled by resources, know-how, capital and strategic opportunities. New Lab acts as an interface pairing leaders of industry and government with technology pioneers that are usually extremely hard for corporates to attract.

Combining the conceptual muscle of ArtRebels and technological advantage of New Lab, we will use the upcoming workshop to explore if and how we can set up a TRANSVIEW innovation studio at New Lab to outsource DTA’s most pressing issues and gain new perspectives by accessing their global community.

You can find Shaun's Presentation here.

Talk by founder of Voluntas
Morten Albæk

As the last speaker of the Learning Expedition, founder and CEO of Voluntas, Morten Albaek joined us for an inspiring talk focussing on how organisations fundamentally can change the way human potential is led and realized.

By being management consultants by profession and philosophers by heart, Morten and his team have gained expertise rooted in the fields of humanistic capitalism and enlightened policy-making. Through grasping the core meaning of corporations, Voluntas supports organisations to facilitate leadership, culture, strategy, performance management and brand which lives up to their vision and values.

“Consumers wouldn’t care if 77% of brands they use disappeared tomorrow.”

The biggest challenge to shift an organisation from value to virtue is not a lack of awareness but the implementation in practice. Together with Voluntas, we want to explore how we can accelerate DTA’s transformation to become a more meaningful brand and create a more enthusiastic work environment.

Magazine Issue #2 Handover

During the group reflection, ArtRebels handed over the second issue of our magazine focusing on Transformative Innovation.

Transformation is a theme that saturates almost every part of not only this Learning Expedition, but also our entire project. Whether it’s transforming bus systems, transforming internal company culture, using technology to catalyse transformation, or transforming Daimler Trucks Asia to be a more innovative, agile and future-focused organisation — transformation is the end goal of almost everything we’re working on together.

But meaningful transformation doesn’t happen easily. Because of this, we should take every opportunity we can to stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us — to learn and be inspired by business leaders and companies who have already embarked on their journey of transformation.

The last time we met, ArtRebels presented DTA with an editorial package that unfolded and storytold Social Dreaming, one of the tools within our innovation model. This time, we’ve done the exact same thing, but rather than choosing another piece of the puzzle, we’ve zoomed out and focused on the output of the entire model itself — Transformative Innovation.

So, the final part of our two-day Learning Expedition was to leave DTA with Issue #2 of TRANSVIEW Magazine, titled Systemic Reimagining, which explores stories of corporate transformation, social entrepreneurship and the successful marriage of financial profit with genuine societal purpose. How can we reimagine the systems that we work in and the ways we do business in order to create real, lasting value both for people and the planet?

We hope you all enjoy the Magazine — and if you don’t have a physical copy yet, you can find it here on TRANSVIEW.io.
