“If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room”
Gaining new perspectives
This is a saying that we have always believed in and it’s the underlying philosophy of our collaborative approach. We always strive to surround ourselves and Daimler with people who are smarter than us –– chosen not only for their skills but also their values. We see ourselves as an interface for innovation between Daimler Trucks Asia and our vast network of thought leaders, experts and talents and we consider it one of our main responsibilities to build, nurture and facilitate these networks around DTA and make sure to anchor them strategically into our common mission.
The Learning Expedition is a format that belongs to what we call Cultural Programming, a tool and framework to engage with collaborators designed to inspire, educate and connect. ArtRebels conceptualised, curated and facilitated a two-day programme to gain new insights and perspectives from selected forward-thinking companies and individuals within innovation, mobility, systemic change and meaningful leadership. Each and every part of the programme is highly tailored to the needs and dreams we have for DTA and some of the speakers even has the potential to become part of our journey, when we decide to set up a long term partnership.

Introduction & Opening Talk
by Carla C. Hjort
We started the first day at SPACE10 with Carla sharing how ArtRebels was founded, how the IKEA-journey started and how it has evolved over the years. For the first time, Carla gave a glimpse behind the curtain and unveiled the financial setup of the research and design lab including the master contract, the non-profit setup of the extended core team, case budgets, the responsibilities towards IKEA, legal framework as well as the ambitions for the next five years.
“Life begins where fear ends.”
Meeting with Maersk Growth
After lunch, we met with Sune Stilling, Head of Growth at Maersk, the largest container ship and supply vessel operator in the world with activities in the transport, logistics and energy sectors.
As with many global companies, Maersk is facing uncertain times through global shifts that will affect their business in the years to come. To stay relevant and ahead of their competitors, Maersk Growth was initiated with the vision to accelerate the future of trade through strategic investments in emerging business models and technologies.
They defined three themes of investment:
Smart Logistics
Enable Trade
Sustainable Supply Chain
Since Sune and his team started the adventure three years in, they tried various strategies to gain reputation in the global VC network. After initiating partnerships with start-up platforms and external VC funds, they decided to build up their capacities in-house. By doing so, they have become much better in knowing what they want, how to look for it and to define their value proposition. Today, Maersk Growth has been able to place strategic investments in more than twenty companies.

"It’s all about gaining legitimacy and building up the reputation of your brand to attract the right partners and talents."
New Proposals by Lukas Kauer
Coffee on Wheels helped us to gain deeper insights into the organisation, open up perspectives and surface new ideas. Lukas presented four high-level concepts which go beyond the current framework of our partnership, including:
Market I/O
An additional research report dedicated to Daimler Trucks Asia’s home and core markets, which will explore market-specific issues and opportunities through the lens of three guiding principles: Digital Empowerment, Circular Societies and Social Systems. We want to gain deeper insights, identify the most pressing issues and translate them into potential business opportunities. The report will be approached in close collaboration with local research partners.
Annual TRANSVIEW Conference
We imagine a future where DTA hosts an annual TRANSVIEW Conference, positioning the platform and DTA as progressive thought leaders within the future of mobility. The TRANSVIEW Conference could easily become a key strategic pillar in the future, to build and extend our network of collaborators, engage with relevant stakeholders, connect to government bodies and the public, be inspired, gain new insights and position DTA as forward-thinking and future-ready. We will make this concept ready for our meeting in June.
TRANSVIEW Talks
An additional event series concept within our tool of Cultural Programming, with the mission of engaging collaborators to inspire, educate, connect and accelerate departments of DTA on their mission across the entire organisation. ArtRebels will define the brief and curate the programme closely together with sparring partners within the organisation. These would be of a similar format to the Learning Expedition we just designed and facilitated for DTA in Copenhagen.
Digital Transformation
In all conversations, the clear need for support in accelerating the Digital Transformation of the organisation was flagged. In order to identify challenges within the organisation, translating them into feasible opportunities and actionable concepts, ArtRebels proposed to add new superpowers to the current core team unfolding initial focus areas such as Digital Dealership and Sales Experience, E-Commerce and Product Presentation, Digital Customer Support and Aftersales, Platform businesses and services as well as Digital Learning Experiences.
After a round of feedback we decided that all of the above points are relevant but —as Sven suggested — we will postpone until our next meeting in June or in August when we have delivered our final recommendations for how to collaborate in the future.

Talk by Jeff Risom, Gehl Architects
Gehl Architects is a global leader in people-centred urban design. With studios in Copenhagen, New York and San Francisco, the architecture firm has the vision to design better cities for people.
Jeff Risom, Gehl’s Head of Innovation met us at the ArtRebels office to unfold what they do and in particular how they approach partnering with local governments, corporates and citizens to be active leaders of system changes. In addition to showcasing a few of their latest projects like their work for Ford Motors, IDEO, the mayor of Singapore and mobility platforms such as ridesharing apps, Jeff introduced us to some of the studio’s tools to underline the importance of the triangular relationship between government, corporates and citizens in order to understand the larger systems and strategic mechanisms in society. A relationship we find highly relevant for our collaboration to explore further.
At the end of his presentation, he highlighted their collaboration with Google, mapping hyperlocal street-by-street air quality data by equipping street view cars with mobile air sensors in Copenhagen and London. Since air pollution and temperature in urban environments are an uphill battle for city planners in the years to come, this could open up an interesting opportunity for Daimler Trucks Asia.

Introduction of TRANSVIEW.IO
by Carla C. Hjort
Every project needs a name. Therefore, ArtRebels started to play around, trying to express the vision and mission of the initiative in an appealing, engaging and understandable way. In the process of coming up with a name, we identified two keywords: “transportation” and “point of view”. In other words: we want to open up new perspectives for the world of transportation. “TRANSVIEW – Discover Mobility” was born.
"There is no innovation without a great story."
Our initial idea was simple: cataloguing all content and inspiration we find on our journey and putting it into context through an intuitive digital archive. As we grow smarter, so will the archive as we maintain the opportunity to go back in time to revisit the most inspiring articles, meetings and developments from our journey. We shared Version 1.0 with the team, and we were so happy to feel the shared excitement for this new platform.
Introducing the idea of Version 2.0
From day one we have been imagining a future where we would open up the platform and make it not only public-facing, but also the heart of TRANSVIEW and the mobile “home” for everything connected to the future of mobility. We see a huge potential to use this digital platform as a core strategic asset (in combination with the TRANSVIEW conference) and our final recommendation will include a much larger and ambitious vision and plan for this platform.
